Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Regional Office for Europe (Europe Office) – based in Geneva – promotes intergovernmental policy dialogue and regional cooperation, increases national capacity for environmental management and response emergencies, raises awareness and enhances information exchange, and translates global policies into regional action. Within UNEP/ROE, UNEP’s Brussels Office is ensuring regular and strategic relations with the European Union institutions (esp. European Commission, European External Action Service, European Parliament, Council of the EU), and supports related partnership building efforts, through intelligence gathering, policy dialogues, networking, as well as monitoring of policies and funding opportunities from the EU. The role of outreach & information in the Brussels Office is focused predominantly on communication activities, closely linked to policy dialogue with the EU as well as programmatic partnerships, ensuring a regular exchange of information in the spirit of partnership with the EU institutions, other UN entities & key partners, and providing visibility for these workstreams and the work of UNEP. The intern selected will gain pragmatic and professional experience of working at UNEP as well as engaging with various EU institutions and stakeholders and, to a lesser extent, with the general public. S/he will also gain an introduction to the broad range of UN & UNEP activities worldwide. Communication and Outreach Under the direct supervision of the Communications/Information Assistant of the UNEP Brussels Office, the intern will work on:
Communication
 Support in drafting (web) articles and/or reports from events organized by UNEP Brussels Office.
 Contribute to drafting internal and external e- newsletters .
 Contribute to the Europe Office social media channels with specific focus on messaging of relevance to EU audiences.  Contribute to the development of promotional material for the office (such as event invites, brochures, and web features including quizzes when relevant).
 Assist in proofreading and editing of documents. Outreach events
 Support the implementation of outreach strategies in order to raise UNEP’s profile in the development and environment fields.
 Support the organization & undertaking of high-level visits and events.
 Support the launch of UNEP reports in Brussels.
 Support the organization of public outreach activities in Belgium (for example in the context of campaigns, such as UN Day, and World Environment Da) and other major moments in the year (for example EU Green Week)
 Contribute with other UN entities on collaborative events and visibility opportunities.
 Contribute to local activities with Belgian authorities. Information management
 Assist in updating UNEP’s online tools for information exchange with the EU.

Qualifications/special skills

– Applicants must be enrolled in at least the third year of a first university degree program or in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) program at the time of application, commencement and during the internship.
– Preferred area of study: communication/journalism, international relations/European studies/environment or other relevant studies.
– Be computer literate in standard software applications; and suitable IT knowledge to develop visual products (invitations, booklets, etc).
– Very good writing skills (synthesis of texts, drafting of articles, social media messaging, etc.).
– Have a demonstrated interest in environmental issues, the United Nations, and/or international governance and a proven knowledge of the European Union’s institutions and policies. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

Fluency of English is required. Knowledge of French or Dutch desirable
